What is the Trinity (Godhead)?

By YBible

  1. The Bible teaches there is only one God.

Old Testament

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: - Deuteronomy 6:4 I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me… - Isaiah 45:5 Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? - Malachi 2:10

New Testament

For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; - 1 Timothy 2:5 …The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: - Mark 12:29 But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him. - 1 Corinthians 8:6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. - Ephesians 4:6

  1. The Bible teaches one God interacts with the universe by three persons.

God the Father, God the Son also called the Word, and God the Holy Ghost also called the Holy Spirit.

This is the doctrine of the Trinity (Godhead), and it is beyond human comprehension.

For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. - 1 John 5:7

Singular “name,” three persons.

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: - Matthew 28:19

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen. - 2 Corinthians 13:14

You can partially understand the Trinity (Godhead) by observing creation.

For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: - Romans 1:20

The fundamental qualities of the universe reflect the Godhead.

  • Water: Ice, liquid and vapor.

  • Sunlight: Visible, ultraviolet and infrared.

  • Atom: Proton, neutron and electron.

  • Universe: Time, space and matter.

Even you have a spirit, soul and body (1 Thessalonians 5:23).

  1. Proof from the Bible all three members of the Trinity (Godhead) are God.

The Father is God.

…for him hath God the Father sealed. - John 6:27 …Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. - Romans 1:7

Jesus is God.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. - John 1:1 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us... - John 1:14
And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. - 1 Timothy 3:16
Who is the image of the invisible God, - Col. 1:15
For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. - Col. 2:9
I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty. - Revelation 1:8 …and I will be his God. - Revelation 21:7

Old Testament Prophecy.

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. - Isaiah 9:6

See our article “Is Jesus God?” for more proof Jesus is deity.

The Holy Spirit is God.

Some teach the Holy Spirt is just a force. But a mere force does not speak, forbid, grieve, can be blasphemed, resisted nor has a mind.

He speaks.

As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. - Acts 13:2
…Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers… - Acts 28:25–27

(Paul quoting Isaiah 6)

He forbids.

…and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia… the Spirit suffered them not. - Acts 16:6–7

He is grieved.

And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. - Ephesians 4:30

He is resisted.

Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye. - Acts 7:51

He can be blasphemed.

…but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. - Matthew 12:31

He inspires the scriptures.

For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. - 2 Peter 1:21 Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before… - Acts 1:16 ...all Scripture is given by inspiration of God. - 2 Timothy 3:16

He has a mind.

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. - Romans 8:26-27

He is God.

why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost … thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. - Acts 5:3–4

  1. The members of the Trinity (Godhead) can be separate in thought and location.

Some deny they can be in separate locations or have separate thoughts. The verses bellow plainly show they can and do. Ask the question: “Is this acting, or should we believe these scriptures as written?”

Jesus in the water, the Holy Spirit descending upon Him, God the Father speaking from Heaven, the Spirit then driving Him into the wilderness.

And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him: And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. - Mark 1:10-11 And immediately the Spirit driveth him into the wilderness. - Mark 1:12

Jesus distinguishes between all three.

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. - John 14:26

Jesus praying to the Father.

Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. - Luke 22:42

Acting or genuine?

And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? - Matthew 27:46

All three separated at the same time.

But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, - Acts 7:55

Question: Why do we say each member is a person (Personality)?

Answer: Try replacing person with another term like form or part. Both terms would only be partially accurate, but when evaluating all the verses neither term gives the full picture.

The correct description is three persons but only one being (God).
