What is the gospel?

By YBible

The first four books of the New Testament are called the gospels. Each book is an account of Jesus Christ's life from four different perspectives (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John).

Further on in the New Testament we are told the gospel is these key facts about Jesus' life:

1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: - 1 Corinthians 15:1-4

The gospel is the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ for our sins. These are the essential points that we preach and have believed to be saved.

The Warning

But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. - Galatians 1:8

If a person, religion or even an angel tells you salvation is by doing or believing anything other then this simple gospel, let them be accursed.

Who changes, adds or subtracts from the gospel?

A few examples:

  • Catholicism: They make salvation dependent on sacraments only they can provide. They add their exclusive baptisms, confessions, eucharist, priests, Mary’s intercession to the gospel in order for you to be saved.

  • Islam: Islam was started by an “angel” appearing to Muhammad. They teach Jesus didn’t die for our sins, nor did He rise again.

  • Mormonism: Mormonism was started by an “angel” that delivered “another testament of Jesus Christ” it is another gospel. They teach salvation through their exclusive system only. They teach God was once a man like us and they will become gods someday if they are faithful Mormons.

While the religions of the world change, add, subtract and make salvation dependent on themselves. The Bible makes salvation simple and available to anyone, anywhere.

Believe the simple gospel from your heart:

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. - Romans 10:9

Whosoever calls:

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. - Romans 10:13

You cannot save yourself:

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. - Ephesians 2:8-9

Repent and believe the gospel:

And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel. - Mark 1:15
